Nancy Ricci - Guest Blogger

I recently put out a call for guest bloggers while I'm on vacation since I wasn't sure if I'd have an internet connection. I'm so pleased that Nancy Ricci responded. I "met" Nancy through Twitter (getting purly). Her messages are wonderful and uplifting and I've enjoyed reading them. I've also enjoyed our conversations about knitting, designers and music.

Nancy, thank you so much for your kindness. Please let me know if I can ever return the favor.

Here's Nancy.....

Hi, my name is Nancy Ricci and I am addicted to yarn and knitting. Seriously addicted.

It all started in February 2006 when my husband's co-worker showed me how to do the knit stitch. Several days after I went to a yarn shop where they taught me how to do the purl stitch, I purchased some yarn, straight bamboo needles in several sizes and promised myself that I would learn all that there is to learn about knitting.

To practice the knit stitch, I made a scarf in only the knit stitch. And to practice the purl stitch, I made a scarf only in the purl stitch.

Once I got those two stitches down, I was ready to get serious about my knitting. I would ask questions in online knitting forums like Knitter's review and Knitting help, purchased the book Stitch 'n Bitch and devoured its contents but most importantly, I would practice my knitting for at least 4 hours a day.

With every little project I finished I would feel so proud. And with every new stitch that I learned, my hunger for wanting to know more, grew.

Fingerless Gloves

Soon enough I wanted to make myself a simple fingerless glove. One that was not knitted in the round because I was too new of a knitter to tackle the double pointed needles.

I searched and searched the internet for many a night but without success. Nearly all fingerless gloves designs that I found where written for in the round. I shrugged my shoulders, took some dk yarn and US5 needles and made a little rectangle. I folded it over, sew up the sides and made sure I would leave an opening for my thumb. Tada! The most simplest fingerless glove in the whole wide world!

I made several fingerless gloves that way and threw a basket weave stitch and also some cables in the mix. I had so much fun and was elated every time I would learn something new!

My best resource during that time were the fantastic video instructions by Amy Finlay over at Knittinghelp.com. I learned so much from Amy Finlay! She is so generous in sharing the knowledge!

Can you please write up that pattern for me?

When a couple of knitters asked me for the pattern of one of my gloves I said: "I never wrote a pattern...but I can figure it out!"

And so I did... I figured it out and wrote three fingerless glove patterns in a row and called them Deneadin, Emanelle and Seattle.

I had so much fun doing that, and got even more excited about knitting that I decided to start a knitting blog and named it Getting Purly With It. I wrote my first knitting blogpost in April of 2007, one year after I first learned how to knit.

Working at yarn shop CloseKnit in Portland, Oregon

In the Summer of 2007 I was offered a job at my favorite yarn shop called Closeknit. It came as a total surprise...

I seized the opportunity and learned even more about yarn and knitting. I expanded my knowledge by listening to all the great knitters that visit the shop. I expanded my knowledge by tackling knitting problems for customers. I expanded my knowledge by being surrounded by all different kind of fibers and simply submerged in it!

I am such a grateful little knitter...

My world consists of so much beautiful yarn, colors, patterns, knitting tools. The variables are endless and the projects plenty. The friendships forged are even better and every day I look out for new fiber friends!

Thanks Joanne, for letting me be your guestblogger. I am thankful to have met you on TWITTER!

Thank you, Nancy. I really enjoyed reading your post. I hope to meet you in person someday!
